Activated Carbon Filter

An activated carbon filter utilizes the abundant capillary pores of activated carbon to adsorb and filter large organic molecules, residual chlorine, iron oxides, and other colloidal substances from water. This adsorption process is irreversible; once the activated carbon reaches its adsorption capacity, it loses its ability to adsorb and cannot remove pollutants through backwashing.

Additionally, after adsorbing organic substances, activated carbon provides a rich nutrient source for bacteria, leading to significant bacterial growth within the filter, which can increase the microorganism content in the filtered water. Therefore, proper maintenance of the activated carbon filter is essential.

Control of Inlet Water Turbidity:

During filtration, when water containing suspended solids enters the filter layer, it still performs a filtering action known as penetration filtration. This is similar to using sludge as a contact medium during coagulation. The sand particles in the filter layer are more tightly arranged than the suspended sludge particles in the clarification tank. As a result, the particles carried out of the clarification tank have more opportunities to collide with the filter particles through the tortuous channels in the filter media layer, causing the flocs, suspended solids, and filter media surfaces in the water to adhere to each other.

If the inlet water turbidity is high, it will bring excessive impurities to the filter layer, easily clogging the gaps and surfaces of the filter media, hindering the adsorption effect of the equipment, and causing the activated carbon to age and fail over time.

Therefore, the inlet water turbidity for the activated carbon filter must be controlled below 5 NTU. Especially when the dosage of coagulant is not timely adjusted, it will increase the load on the filter media. Long-term overload operation will reduce its service life, so it is crucial to adjust the appropriate dosage of coagulant promptly.
